ANDREA CARMINE BELIN

SWEDEN

Andrea Carmine Belin is an Associate Professor, Principal Investigator and Director of the Centre for Cluster Headache at the department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. Dr Carmine Belin has more than 20 years of experience in the neurology research field and a strong interest in primary headache disorders with focus on cluster headache. Her research team investigates the link to genetic factors, circadian rhythm, sleep and sex differences to allow insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms and aid the identification of pathways suitable to target in the development of novel and better drugs. Her team has established a biobank with biological tissue and clinical data from cluster headache patients and controls. Using this biobank, she has identified sex differences in cluster headache and links between cluster headache and genes with critical roles in the generation of circadian rhythms. She has been part of establishing the International Consortium for Cluster Headache genetics which has led to the identification of eight chromosomal loci strongly linked to cluster headache. Andrea Carmine Belin has published more than 100 scientific papers and is an elected Trustee on the Board of the International Headache Society and board member and treasurer of the Swedish Headache Society.
