RUNE HÄCKERT CHRISTENSEN

Dr. Rune Häckert Christensen is a translational physician-scientist affiliated with the Danish Headache Center and Harvard Medical School–Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He obtained is medical degree at the University of Copenhagen and currently serves on the Science and Research Committee of the International Headache Society, as well as Section Editor for the Journal of Pain Research.
His line of research focuses on advanced MRI methods and in vivo electrophysiology to elucidate the pathophysiology of migraine and post-traumatic headache. Drawing on multimodal imaging, his work has shown an important role of pain-processing region, especially the insula and anterior cingulate cortex, in migraine and post-traumatic headache, and has linked migraine aura to signs of neuroinflammation in the visual cortex. Bridging clinical and preclinical models, his research incorporates specialized electrophysiological investigations of the trigeminal system to help decipher mechanisms of migraine and headache initiation. In parallel, he is engaged in meta-analytical evidence synthesis related to the classification, treatment, and clinical features of headache disorders. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on headache.
